Friday Roundup (25).jpg

This year Earth Day (22 April) marks over five decades of global environmental action, advocating for renewable energy solutions to combat climate change and create a sustainable future. The 55th anniversary highlights the need for a global transition to renewable energy sources, with a goal of tripling generation by 2030. With falling costs and continuous technological advancements, renewable energy represents a feasible solution for the future that supports economic growth, job creation, and significant health benefits through reduced pollution.

What Unipart are doing

Unipart has transitioned 97% of its UK sites to renewable electricity, a zero carbon energy source. This action, along with a 10% reduction in gas consumption in 2024 compared to 2023, demonstrates Unipart's commitment to supporting energy solutions. To further drive energy improvements and enable targeted efficiency measures, Unipart will continue to oversee the roll-out of EcoInsight across all operations by 2026. EcoInsight will provide more granular energy data, allowing for better analysis and targeted action.

Unipart is also engaged in The Zero Carbon Oxford Partnership (ZCOP), consisting of Oxford's largest organisations to achieve net zero carbon emissions in the city by 2040. ZCOP is developing a Roadmap and Action Plan to look at how the energy system will need to change to support renewable energy and low carbon technologies.

How can you get involved?

  • Take part in the Renewable Energy Quiz; How much do you know about renewable energy? Take the quiz and test your knowledge!
  • Conduct an energy audit; check infrastructure and appliances every day for one week to see where energy is currently being wasted, or can be saved!
  • Spark your ideas on how your site team has reduced gas and electricity consumption, and how you plan to do this in the future.
  • Watch our videos with handy tips on how to reduce your gas and energy consumption

Did you know?

  • A third of the world's electricity generation came from renewables in 2023, that’s a significant increase from just 19% in the year 2000
  • In the UK 42% of its energy comes from renewables, that’s up from 14% just 10 years ago. 30% comes from wind, 5% from solar and the rest from biomass and hydro
  • 31% of China’s electricity comes from renewables and China leads the way in renewable energy investments, investing $818bn in clean energy in 2024, surpassing the combined total of the US, EU and UK
