Unipart Dorman’s Ella Harper Wins Apprentice Award.

Ella Harper, an Apprentice Toolmaker at our Unipart Dorman site, has been awarded the prestigious Apprentice Award at the Everywoman in Transport & Logistics Awards ceremony. This award highlights Ella's exceptional contributions and remarkable journey in the field of transport and logistics since joining Unipart back in 2020.
Since joining, Ella has immersed herself in a dynamic learning environment, perfecting her skills as an apprentice toolmaker. Ella is currently undertaking her Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician, Level 3 apprenticeship with Southport College and is preparing for her end point assessment. Ella’s journey has been marked by significant achievements and a dedication to excellence.
One of Ella’s standout accomplishments has been her mastery of the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine. “The CNC is a really important piece of machinery that allows me to create bespoke jigs, fixtures and tooling. Using it has enabled me to make things that are otherwise impossible to make on manual machines and gives me the ability to multitask, therefore increasing my productivity.” Ella explains.
Beyond her technical skills, Ella actively inspires the next generation of female engineers by speaking at local schools and sharing her experiences. She is passionate about showing young women that they can pursue careers in fields traditionally dominated by men.
"When I was at school, jobs like the one I do today weren’t promoted to girls, and during my whole career to date, I have never encountered another woman doing a similar job to mine. I’m passionate about showing young women that they can do anything," says Ella.

A Journey Rooted in Engineering
Ella's passion for engineering began early in life. "When I was younger, I always wanted to join the Army as some form of engineer, eventually landing on Aerospace Engineering. I wanted to do this because I grew up in army camps and moved around lots because my family were in the army," Ella shares.
After not being able to join the army, Ella pursued an engineering course in college, where she was the only girl in her course. Recognised for her potential, Ella was recommended for an apprenticeship with Lattimers, where she spent two years developing her skills in CNC setting and running, as well as engineering problem-solving.
The Unipart Experience
Ella's journey with Unipart Dorman began after she was made redundant during COVID. "While I was applying for jobs, Unipart Dorman got in contact with me. I started out on the production line for just over a year. Then, as the incumbent tool maker was leaving, I made it clear that that's where I wanted to be, and with my previous experience, I was placed in the tool room," Ella recounts.
Initially learning from the departing tool maker, Ella quickly took on the challenge of being mostly self-taught. She learned to design, programme, set, run, and assemble using a wide range of tools and machines. "I love it!" Ella exclaims.

Support and Growth
The support from Unipart has been crucial in Ella’s development. "The support from Dawn Allett in terms of my learning, development, and apprenticeship has been amazing. She has made me and all the other apprentices feel safe, and we know we can always contact her if we have any questions or requests," says Ella.

Unipart’s Legacy
Reflecting on Unipart's 50th year anniversary, Ella shares a memorable experience: "A memory that stands out to me and that I will never forget is definitely being a finalist and winner of the Everywoman in Transport & Logistics Awards. To have been nominated means so much to me, so to have made it to the finals and win is beyond words. Having a Unipart table there and having all of the support from everyone around me was amazing."
Paul Brearley, Unipart Dorman, Head of Operations, commends Ella's dedication and passion: "Since joining Unipart, it was clear Ella had a real desire and love of tool room work. Her constant focus on learning more skills to deliver jigs, tools, and fixtures with visible pride makes her a credit to Unipart."
Ella’s journey is a testament to the impact of dedication, skill, and mentorship. As she continues to excel and inspire, her story paves the way for more women to thrive in transport and logistics.
