Making Simplicity Out Of A Complex Process at Magna Park

October 10th, 2019 The leading Edge

Using Operational Excellence and Six Sigma to regain control

Apple KBB receiving at UL Magna Park were experiencing difficulties with their performance.

Team Leader Maria Balla-McBride looked into the reasons behind it, and along with the KBB Receiving team, identified that the complexity of the process was a major cause of its low performance.

Working with her team, they explored ways to simplify the process while still following the processing script that their customer required.

In a previous job, Maria worked in a production environment where components were added to a product along a line of workstations to produce the final article.

Using the same production principles, they managed to break the process down into five distinct steps. They then balanced the work across the line so that each person could produce the same quantity in the same amount of time.

Another benefit that they realised was that the operators became real experts at their part of the process, which improved the quality of their work.

Putting these changes in place made the process very stable, which enables them to achieve their KPI without fail.

Excellent example of Continual improvement in action. Exemplary leadership, teamwork and cooperation put to great effect to achieve the required optimisation of a process. "Working to put quality into the process" is well worth the effort. Well done to all involved. First class working and results.
